The Endocannabinoid System in dogs and cats

Just like humans, cats and dogs have CB1 and CB2 receptors in their bodies. CBD fits like a lock and key into these receptors, serving specific functions in the health and well-being of your pet.

These receptors called the endocannabinoid system, are responsible for the uptake and processing of cannabinoid compounds and work to regulate a wide array of bodily functions. These include:
– Balance and co-ordination
– Muscle movement
– Activation/suppression of appetite
– Digestive tract functions
– Memory and recollection abilities
– Heart rate and blood pressure
– Ability to feel pain and pleasure
– Mood regulation and stability
– Reproductive processes in males and females
– Brain development and internal clock regulation

CANNABINOIDS AND THEIR RECEPTORS

Cannabinoids influence certain parts of your pet’s brain. From the brainstem up, they affect all parts of the central nervous system and can alter the function of many parts of the brain, including the amygdala, hippocampus, hypothalamus, cerebral cortex, basal ganglia, brainstem and cerebellum.

The endocannabinoid system consists of CB1 and CB2 receptors which are mostly found within the primary nervous system.

CB1 receptors are in and around the spinal cord and brain and play a large role in assisting with regulation – from storing memories and suppressing hunger, to expressing moods and registering an appetite.

The CB2 receptors are primarily situated in the immune system, though some are also located in the nervous system. These receptors are more involved in processing CBD oils and are activated when your pet ingests even trace amounts of CBD. They work hard to bring your pet’s body to a place of calmness and serenity and, once CB2 receptors bind to the CBD molecules, your pet’s immune system immediately improves, there’ll be a significant decrease in inflammatory symptoms and your pets will become more physically able and active.
